Proposed – Greens Winter Programme 2010/11
Over recent years course development has been curtailed in the main due to monetary constraints. However, this year, due to Course Manager Martin Thompson’s diligent efforts, we have managed to save sufficient monies to prepare a full Winter Programme which we trust will benefit all RGC members.
The intended scope of work includes:-
Tees
Tees at RGC continue to be a problem
- Several tees are too narrow causing erosion problems in several areas. By widening certain tees it will enable movement of tee blocks across the teeing ground, thus enabling greens staff to spread the load over a far greater area.
- Irrigation - No tees at RGC have pop up sprinklers that work (although there is a piping system in place)
- Drainage - Proper drainage required.
- Very few of the tees are level so all future tees will be laser levelled and have a fall to drain.
It is proposed that starting on the 11th October the following work on several tees will take place for completion before the end of 2010 (weather permitting).
7th Tee
Remodel, widening by approx 2 metres, drain to remove surface water entering the tee from above, renewing the irrigation, creating new steps/path from the 6th green and possibly a further set onto the path adjacent to the tee.
It is intended to close the 6th green during the winter period. Members will be kept informed as to when the 6th green will be open for play again. The 7th tee will be out of action until Spring 2011.
A temporary green will be created on the 6th fairway for use during the winter months. A temporary tee will be placed in the semi rough adjacent to the 7th fairway.
9th Tee
Remodel, widening the tee by approx 2.5 metres towards the 11th green, drainage, irrigation and associated work to take place before the end of 2010 (weather permitting).
Again it is intended to create a temporary tee beyond the end of the 9th path. It is also proposed that the back tee (never used) is brought into use throughout the winter for Saturday competitions.
10th Tee
Re turf and upgrade the irrigation. The winter tee will be repositioned closer to the path
18th Men’s Competition Tee
Re turf and upgrade the irrigation
Drainage
Work will commence in the New Year over two specific areas.
- The second hole has currently an open drain which needs to be closed in. A new drain will pick up the existing current open drain and continue down the left hand side of the second green and away into the stoned, open drain
b. The fourth hole continues to cause problems in the area around the hollow. It is intended to investigate and correct this by introducing a new drain above the hollow, diverting water (from the 5th hole) away from this problem area.
Another area causing concern is on the left as you walk away from the 4th tee and again investigation and remedial work will hopefully alleviate this drainage problem.
Paths
Three areas will be upgraded over the winter months:-
(a) A new path will be created running through the copse above the 1st green. The existing path will be discontinued.
(b) A new path will be created from the men’s 2nd competition tee down to the existing path on the second hole.
(c) Create a new exit above the existing from the 11th green
(d) Create a temporary path behind the 12th tee towards the 13th green around the perimeter of the top 12th tee to a newly positioned winter mat. The existing entrance to the 12th tee will be closed until Spring 2011.
Winter Mats
No doubt members have already seen that several temporary tees have been moved/modified to ensure surrounding areas will, “by and large” be protected from the usual winter wear and tear (which unfortunately is inevitable if we have a typical Romiley Winter). Wherever possible please keep to the designated paths which will hopefully enable the course to regenerate much more quickly for the start of 2011 season. Many thanks for your co-operation whilst this work is undertaken.
